My name is Tony Phekoo, and I’m proud to be running for Councillor for Ward 3. New Tecumseth has been my home for two decades, and it’s where my wife and I have raised our three wonderful daughters. My academic qualifications include a Master’s degree in Education, Training, and Development, as well as an Honours Bachelor’s degree in Political Science and Economics. My professional career has taken me through the federal, provincial, and municipal public sectors, as well as banking, finance, and now my work as a Mortgage Broker. These experiences have taught me the value of accessible, responsive local government. Whether addressing road safety concerns, supporting local businesses, or ensuring tax dollars are used wisely, I am committed to bringing a steady, community focused voice to the council table. Beyond my professional work, I am an active volunteer and supporter of several charitable and nonprofit organizations—another way I give back to the community that has given so much to my family
II am running for Ward 3 Councillor to ensure our local government remains responsive, transparent, and focused on the issues that directly impact your daily life. My vision for our community centers on five core priorities: Safer Roads & Traffic Management: Enhancing road safety, improving traffic flow, and managing speed in our residential neighborhoods and school zones are vital for protecting our families and pedestrians. Infrastructure First Growth should never outpace our roads, healthcare access, and essential services. I will push for development that only moves forward when our infrastructure is ready. As our community grows, growth must pay for growth. I am committed to ensuring that new developments cover their fair share of infrastructure costs so the financial burden doesn't fall on existing homeowners. 📐 Manage Growth Responsibly We need smart, balanced planning—not unchecked expansion. I will advocate for growth that fits our community and protects our quality of life. 🌿 Protect Rural & Community Character Ward 3 is unique. From rural properties to established neighborhoods, I will work to preserve the character and environment that residents value. ⚖️ Fairness & Accountability Residents deserve transparency and a strong voice at council. I will listen, respond, and ensure your concerns are represented. You deserve full visibility into municipal decisions. I will champion open communication, accessible council processes, and active community engagement so your voice is always heard before decisions are made. 💰 Respect for Taxpayers You should see real value for your tax dollars. I support responsible budgeting and ensuring new development contributes its fair share. Every tax dollar must be used wisely and efficiently. I will advocate for fiscal discipline and smart budgeting to deliver maximum value for your hard-earned money.

Seasonal off-leash dog areas
Some municipalities, including Toronto, use seasonal off-leash designations to make better use of park spaces when they aren’t being used for their primary purpose.
Could the Town consider a similar approach here by designating certain sports fields or other suitable public spaces as off-leash dog areas during their off-season? This could provide residents with more legal opportunities to exercise their dogs off leash without requiring the Town to create entirely new dedicated spaces.

What exactly have you done for Tottenham, with all the builds more cars on our town lines and the roads have become hazards especially in winter months.

Many people choose to live here because they want small town character and little or no growth at all. At the same time, the province is requiring municipalities to accommodate significant growth and new housing. How do you plan to balance those competing pressures — meeting provincial growth targets while still preserving the character and quality of life that residents value?

As a resident of 20+ years, I’m concerned about the town’s appropriation of funds for much needed repairs. I’ve seen a steady decline in this regard over the years. I need to know that our mayor and council will put the town’s needs first - such as much needed proper repair of our town roads, using your voice to push for a new high school - for example.
As mayor, what can you say to instill some hope and faith that these needs will be met?

Accessibility issues. Our town is not accessible to get around- our town has several people in the comunity who need accessibility and don't get it. There are only 3 accessible buses in all of Simcoe County. Linx transit buses do not accommodate people who use mobility scooters. Linx transit stops are limited and Tottenham is completely inaccessible. This has been brought up to council members in the past and only one has taken the opportunity to take the time to respond. I would like to hear from all candidates, as it is not just the elderly who face these issues but families, children and parents. How can we connect New Tecumseth and make it so that EVERYONE can access resources and spaces?

The 2026 Approved Budget directs Growth and Innovation to undertake a feasibility study for a post-secondary skilled-trades centre in New Tecumseth. It appears as a single line, with no supporting rationale, cost estimate or business case. (Page 79)
Relevant context:
Ontario colleges have cut approximately 600 programs amid $1.8B in losses since the 2024 international student visa cap.
New Tecumseth is within Georgian College’s catchment area. Georgian closed its Orillia and Muskoka campuses in August 2026, consolidating programming in Barrie, and has reduced its full-time workforce by approximately 22% with projected losses of 45M and 15-25M next fiscal.
Honda’s $15B Alliston EV expansion is permanently suspended, removing a major source of projected local skilled-trades demand.
Meanwhile, The Province’s Regional Technology Development Site for Simcoe County, Barrie and Orillia is already funded and includes Georgian College, Lakehead University and Honda. New Tecumseth is not currently part of that initiative.
For each candidate:
Do you support proceeding with this feasibility study? Why or why not?
Why pursue a separate facility rather than seek a role in the regional initiative already underway? As home to the region’s anchor automotive employer, should New Tecumseth be pursuing a seat in the existing RTDS network instead, and would you support that approach?
Questions go through a quick review before appearing publicly.
