Jason Shand

Candidate for Councillor Ward 2

Questions

Seasonal off-leash dog areas

Some municipalities, including Toronto, use seasonal off-leash designations to make better use of park spaces when they aren’t being used for their primary purpose.

Could the Town consider a similar approach here by designating certain sports fields or other suitable public spaces as off-leash dog areas during their off-season? This could provide residents with more legal opportunities to exercise their dogs off leash without requiring the Town to create entirely new dedicated spaces.

Answer

I’m not opposed to it, however most parks are not completely fenced and the Town uses the off season time to conduct maintenance. I do feel that each ward should have a designated dog park which ward 2 does not currently have.

What do you consider to be the #1 issue/challenge in this ward and what specific actions would you take to address it?

Answer

My first concern is public safety around our schools. I have seen the traffic studies around the 40km zones and it hasn’t done anything to slow traffic. My first order of business would be to direct town staff to review these areas and what traffic calming measures we can implement to keep our children safe.

What do you want to achieve in the next 4 years to help New Tecumseth become more environmentally sustainable and carbon neutral?

0

Answer

We have to take a practical approach towards being carbon neutral. I don’t believe we should be spending tax payers money just to reach a target.

If there are environmental initiatives to help the tax payers save money, then I will support it. But I am not going to support expensive projects simply because it checks a box.

Do you feel about the 5% tax increase to build another arena before we build a pool?

Answer

Yes. I do have concerns about a 5% tax increase to build another arena before we address the need for a pool. I believe we need to look carefully at our community’s priorities, affordability for taxpayers, and whether our recreation investments are meeting the needs of the whole community.

New Tecumseth has large growth plans as many of us saw proposed earlier in the year. How can new jobs be created that pay New Tec residents properly, so that we do not need to travel south for higher paying employment?

Answer

Growth should strengthen our community so people can live, work and raise their families here, it shouldn't outpace our core services.

We need to support the local businesses already operating here and help them connect with residents while attracting new businees.

All candidates that haven't served on council, how many town meetings have you attended to understand how council works and what concerns are recurring in this community -

Answer

I have attended several meetings in person since i began to consider running for council, and I have watched every meeting on the Town's YouTube channel. This have given me a good understanding of how our current Council operates and how decisions aare made.

A recurring concern I have is the lack of teamwork around the council table. Disageements are important, but somtimes it can appear driven by individual positions or personal agendas. Residents derserve a Council that debates respectfully and keeps the community's best interests at the forefront.

New Tecumseth is growing quickly. What does "smart growth" mean to you in practice - more density, more sprawl, or something else?

Answer

Smart growth is not as simple as adding more density or building larger subdivisions. It means responsible, well planned growth that directs new housing and businesses to areas where roads, wastewater systems, schools and emergency services can support them.

Growth is coming and we must plan accordingly. One of the main reasons I decided to run as a candidate for Ward 2, was watching a few of the current councillors voting to allow the use of Strong Mayor Powers to push though changes that otherwise would not have received the majority support. In my view, this side stepped the democratic decision making process of Council on an issue that will shape the future of our community. Somthing that I would not allow to happen again.

What are the council doing to prevent young riders of e-bikes and scooters. There have been at least 2 accidents in my subdivision involving pre teens/young teens riding e-bikes hitting small children. Are parents being charged for allowing this underage use? Are licenses required to use motorized bikes and scooters in New Tecumseth?
