Wendy, I would very much like to understand your rationale for voting in favour of OPA 5, especially considering it went against the paid consultant's recommendations. Thank you.
Thank you for asking. I appreciate the opportunity to explain my decision.
I certainly considered the consultant's recommendations and respect the work that went into it. However, those recommendations were one part of a much larger discussion about how New Tecumseth will accommodate future growth.
Something I think is important to point out is that our Town also has its own professional planning staff. These are qualified, experienced planners who reviewed and defended the planning rationale behind OPA 5. They had months to recommend changes and ultimately did not recommend a single one. I have confidence in our staff, their professional expertise and the report they brought forward.
Half of council agreed with me, and my vote was not required for the motion to pass. I used my democratic privilege to vote for OPA 5 as I'd done the entire way through the process. I never wavered, not even when it was the unpopular choice to do so and was even told by another member of council to sit down, as the Strong Mayor had his numbers – because I vote with integrity, no matter the personal cost. It's unfortunate that Strong Mayor powers need to be part of this conversation, especially my vote in particular, but it's been convenient for the oppositions stratgey.
Another significant factor in my decision was the reality that if we didn't make a decision, the Province could make one for us.
We're already seeing more decisions affecting our municipality being made outside of our Council chambers. With New Tecumseth losing a representative at County Council, the move toward an appointed rather than elected Warden, and the Province setting the direction for our long-term growth, I am increasingly concerned about how much local control municipalities are retaining.
For me, this was an opportunity to have a say in how that growth is distributed across Alliston, Beeton and Tottenham, rather than leave those decisions entirely in someone else's hands.
Recommending OPA 5 is just a start. It's a long term plan that will no doubt change and evolve over time, and we'll still need to advocate for the infrastructure required to support it, while protecting the character of our communities.
I understand that not everyone agrees with my vote, and I respect that. But I made the decision I believed was in the best long-term interest of New Tecumseth.
I also think it's important to remember that consultants are hired to provide professional advice, but ultimately, they aren't the ones who have to live with the long-term consequences of the decisions made around the Council table. We are. As someone who was born and raised in New Tecumseth and has lived here my entire life, I take that responsibility seriously. I want to see all three of our settlement areas considered in our long-term growth plans, with Alliston, Beeton and Tottenham each having the opportunity to share in the benefits of that growth, rather than concentrating it all in one area. That's something I felt strongly about throughout this process.

1. According to Simcoe.com, when you were a councillor, you were given a conditional discharge for stealing an ATV. Since this time, how have you grown as a person?
2. According to New Tecumseth Times, the majority of council recently voted to see monthly reports on your taxpayer-funded credit card (p card) usage. Why was this needed?
3. Have you in the past or during this campaign taken any donations from developers or their family members?

Will you investigate the continued short staffing concerns in County run Longterm Care homes causing burnout in staff and dissatisfaction in family members?
Stephanie MacLellan
Mayor
If elected I would address that directly through my seat on the County Council.
Understaffed LTC's are a major and growing concern. One we should continue to seek solutions for.
More staffing at facilities also brings more skilled workers into our communities so the importance of obtaining more on the ground staff isnt just health related its also economical.
Jaison Waldman
Mayor
Certainly, that is something that I was unaware of.
The Covid19 pandemic has shown that those who are most vulnerable are often sidelined and invisible. Thank you for raising this important issue.
Please do reach out to to me directly to discuss any specifics that may be relevant. Perhaps your observations and experiences can lead us to find improvements. The lessons can also help other vulnerable sections of our community.

What will you do to resist AI infrastructure/data centres being built in our communities if they are proposed? It seems like there is a huge disconnect between what the people want and the choices those in power are making. We don’t want data centres EVER in New Tec!
Wendy Gabrek
Councillor Ward 2
I had previously answered the same question above. Thank you :)
Peter Barbati
Councillor Ward 5
Timely issue. There are differences between Data centers and A.I. centers.
As for the disconnect, there is an agenda and communication is not part of the agenda. Masses of data are collected, collated, and used to promote policies.
In Europe, a "digital passport" is proposed to allow individuals to use the internet...all in the name of promoting safety for minors.
promoting internet safety can be as simple as mandating the use of a filterable suffix (.prn, .adu, etc.) But, although this will allow parents/guardians, libraries, companies,, educators to block access to inappropriate sites, it will not allow for the more profitable ability to control information access.
Bill 34 (Canada) has some strengths, but also some inherent weaknesses, or gray areas, which will allow the government to decide on what is and isn't acceptable.
Getting back to your initial question though, data is not something that can be held in a corral and if it is not built here, it can be built across the highway, with the exact same outcome.
Stopping a data center will not prevent government overreach, changing governments or their policies will. Bill c34 is attached here:

Chris Rapin
Councillor Ward 1
I don't want them, I'll vote against them.
Laurie Mortimer
Councillor Ward 3
I will say no to large AI data centres in New Tecumseth.
This isn’t about being against AI or technology. It’s about whether this particular type of development makes sense here, and I don’t believe it does.
We already have serious infrastructure challenges ahead of us. The Town itself says our current water planning does not provide the capacity needed for growth to 2051 and that additional capacity will require significant infrastructure investment. We are currently working on additional groundwater supply, water storage and booster pumping capacity just to support the growth already coming.
I don’t support adding a large AI data centre, with potentially significant electricity and water demands, to that equation. And I don’t believe the relatively small number of permanent jobs typically associated with these facilities justifies dedicating valuable employment land and infrastructure capacity to them.
Our water, power, land and infrastructure are valuable resources. My priority is using them to support our residents, our existing businesses and employment growth that actually brings meaningful jobs to New Tecumseth.
So my answer is clear: if a large AI data centre is proposed in New Tecumseth, I will not support it.
James Dougall
Councillor Ward 1
First of all we do y have the water or electrical grid to support.. I’ll be voting no against
Jaison Waldman
Mayor
Progress requires challenging what we do and why? I support progess and advances in technology. The AI and Data Centre debate is misplaced. Currently I can't find any reason for a technology company to invest in one here, there are numerous options that are better suited. Irrespective, protecting our environment from all forms of pollution and harm is an immediate issue that we should all work on. If the technology makes sense and is not harmful then I would be open to examining the benefits in NewTecumseth.

Why is Alliston rec centre called "New Tecumseth" yet Beeton and Tottenham gets to remain as is?
Wendy Gabrek
Councillor Ward 2
To the best of my knowledge, the NTRC name was chosen because the building was built to serve all residents in New Tecumseth with unique offerings, such as the indoor soccer pitch and twin pad ice rinks. Plus we already had the "Old Alliston Arena" as it's affectionately known, or our Alliston Memorial Arena which could be confusing.
This issue actually came before Council during this term when signage appeared overnight referring to the NTRC as the 'Alliston Community Centre'. I supported maintaining the New Tecumseth Recreation Centre name because I believe major municipal facilities can belong to the entire municipality regardless of which community they happen to be physically located in and moreover, because user groups who had stationary, websites, insurance forms and other documentation in the NTRC name said it was confusing to their visiting groups and would be costly to update.
Chris Rapin
Councillor Ward 1
There's a history here. A lot of it has to do with us being one community and not three distinct centres. I believe it was the first big build after amalgamation. The Alliston Memorial Arena follows suit with the other two centres.
Laurie Mortimer
Councillor Ward 3
Great question! And I have to admit, when I saw “Alliston Community Centre,” my first thought was ACC… and apparently Toronto already had dibs on that one. 😂
But there actually is some history behind the NTRC name.
When the New Tecumseth Recreation Centre opened in 2007, Alliston Memorial Arena was still being used as an ice arena. Its ice-making equipment was removed when the new twin-pad NTRC opened.
Alliston Memorial kept its name, and importantly, it really is a Memorial. It was built after WWII and dedicated to those who lost their lives in the First and Second World Wars. That name and history deserve to be preserved.
From what I’ve been able to find, naming the new facility the New Tecumseth Recreation Centre was intentional. Although it is physically located in Alliston, the idea was to create a facility that represented Alliston, Beeton, Tottenham and our rural community. It was meant to belong to all of New Tecumseth.
Personally, I think there was some good thinking behind that. We don’t have to give up the individual identities and history of Alliston, Beeton or Tottenham to also have something that carries the name we all share.
And besides… NTRC has probably grown on us by now. 😉
James Dougall
Councillor Ward 1
Because it was the first arena built after amalgamation in 1991
Jaison Waldman
Mayor
Good question. Using NewTecumseth is a good way to build our unified identity. It is like the Business Improvement Associations and other service groups.

If you are elected to council, which other organizations or groups are you part of or working with that are a pecuniary interest now or previously?
Wendy Gabrek
Councillor Ward 2
In the coming term, I will declare a pecuniary interest on anything to with Honda of Canada Manufacturing as my spouse and stepson are employed there.
Tony Phekoo
Councillor Ward 3
Throughout my life, I have been actively involved with numerous political, religious, professional, cultural, charitable, and non-profit organizations. None of these involvements represent a pecuniary (financial) interest, nor did they ever pose a financial conflict of interest. In addition, I currently do not belong to any of the past aforementioned groups or organizations that has any pecuniary interest in the results of my becoming elected ward counsellor.
Peter Barbati
Councillor Ward 5
I am the current president of the Tottenham & Beeton Chamber of Commerce. I have been and will be participating in various committees, the education bursary committee and other area business committees as they become available or are introduced. I try to work closely with the local BIA as well. Of these, none are a pecuniary interest.
Chris Rapin
Councillor Ward 1
I work for the Simcoe County District School Board, I’m a member of Kiwanis, and I run a hockey program called Ice Elements that rents ice from the town. I also have a business that lines soccer fields for SSU.
Laurie Mortimer
Councillor Ward 3
I have been involved with a number of community organizations over the years, including the Alliston Curling Club, South Simcoe United Community Living Association, South Simcoe and the Alliston & District Chamber of Commerce. My current community memberships include PROBUS and the Royal Canadian Legion.
I do not currently have a financial or pecuniary interest in any of these organizations. If elected, should a matter come before Council where I have a direct or indirect pecuniary interest, I would declare that interest and follow the requirements of Ontario’s Municipal Conflict of Interest Act.
James Dougall
Councillor Ward 1
None. I have no pecuniary interest in any organization or group, either now or previously.
Jaison Waldman
Mayor
None.

Marc, can you explain why you supported deferring the proposed Sports Dome to next year’s budget because of cost concerns, when the Dome was presented as a lower-cost, revenue-generating project with an estimated tax impact of approximately 1.5% and the potential to serve a significantly larger number of users, yet you then supported Councillor Nicole Cox’s motion regarding moving forward with a new Beeton arena — a project expected to carry a substantially higher cost and tax impact and which, at this stage, has not yet gone through a final Council-approved design or recommendation?
How do you reconcile those two positions from a fiscal responsibility and taxpayer-equity perspective?
Separately, the Beeton Athletic Association publicly lists you as the winner of its $20,000 cash draw in June 2026. Given your position as a sitting member of New Tecumseth Council, and Council’s involvement in decisions concerning recreation facilities in Beeton, do you believe it was appropriate for you to participate in and accept that $20,000 prize? Did you seek any advice from the Town’s Integrity Commissioner or declare any potential conflict of interest relating to the Association or subsequent Beeton arena discussions?
Asked by Anonymous · a month ago
Stephanie, do you support moving forward with building a new arena in Beeton if doing so requires a minimum 5.5% property-tax increase that would be borne by residents across the rest of New Tecumseth?
If yes, can you explain why you believe that level of tax increase is justified and whether you would support proceeding even if a significant number of residents outside Beeton oppose the added cost?
